<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In a world with so many choices, we now have alternatives for almost everything.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">How many ways do we want to get into an invert without being able to invert? How many ways do we want to get to a hip-key thread-through without being able to thread through?</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">And honestly, I love that. It&#8217;s super fun to find these alternative pathways and watch them open up a whole new world of movement. Suddenly, people have access to shapes, transitions, and choreography that previously felt out of reach.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Alternative pathways create choreographic freedom. They expand our movement vocabulary and give us more colors to paint with. They help us understand pathways, solve movement problems, and create possibilities that simply wouldn&#8217;t exist if there were only one &#8220;correct&#8221; way.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Alternatives aren’t &#8220;less than.&#8221;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">But sometimes it&#8217;s worth revisiting the movements we&#8217;ve already decided aren&#8217;t for us and asking yourself. “Did I give that move a fair chance?”</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Maybe the question isn&#8217;t whether you choose the alternative. Maybe it&#8217;s <em>why</em> you chose it.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Did you choose an alternative pathway because it was an escape hatch from having to be confronted with something . . .</p>

<div class="wp-block-uagb-blockquote uagb-block-9b6a420d uagb-blockquote__skin-border uagb-blockquote__with-tweet uagb-blockquote__tweet-style-classic uagb-blockquote__tweet-icon_text uagb-blockquote__stack-img-none"><blockquote class="uagb-blockquote"><div class="uagb-blockquote__content"><em>&#8220;Argue for your limitations and you get to keep them.&#8221;</em></div><footer><div class="uagb-blockquote__author-wrap uagb-blockquote__author-at-left"><cite class="uagb-blockquote__author">Elizabeth Gilbert</cite></div><a href="/" class="uagb-blockquote__tweet-button" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><svg width="20" height="20" viewBox="0 0 512 512"><path d="M459.37 151.716c.325 4.548.325 9.097.325 13.645 0 138.72-105.583 298.558-298.558 298.558-59.452 0-114.68-17.219-161.137-47.106 8.447.974 16.568 1.299 25.34 1.299 49.055 0 94.213-16.568 130.274-44.832-46.132-.975-84.792-31.188-98.112-72.772 6.498.974 12.995 1.624 19.818 1.624 9.421 0 18.843-1.3 27.614-3.573-48.081-9.747-84.143-51.98-84.143-102.985v-1.299c13.969 7.797 30.214 12.67 47.431 13.319-28.264-18.843-46.781-51.005-46.781-87.391 0-19.492 5.197-37.36 14.294-52.954 51.655 63.675 129.3 105.258 216.365 109.807-1.624-7.797-2.599-15.918-2.599-24.04 0-57.828 46.782-104.934 104.934-104.934 30.213 0 57.502 12.67 76.67 33.137 23.715-4.548 46.456-13.32 66.599-25.34-7.798 24.366-24.366 44.833-46.132 57.827 21.117-2.273 41.584-8.122 60.426-16.243-14.292 20.791-32.161 39.308-52.628 54.253z"></path></svg>Tweet</a></footer></blockquote></div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">As it relates to aerial, I think I&#8217;d adapt that slightly:</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>&#8220;Get curious about your limitations and you get to learn from them.&#8221;</strong></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Bodies are wonderfully complicated.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Proportions matter. Previous injuries matter. Mobility, strength, fear, anatomy&#8230; they all shape what is and isn&#8217;t available to us. Some limitations are absolutely real, and some may never change.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">But what I find interesting is how much territory we sometimes give those limitations. Sometimes a limitation only affects one movement. Sometimes we quietly let it define an entire family of movements.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I don&#8217;t know what it&#8217;s like to move in your body. Neither does anyone else.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">A good coach shouldn&#8217;t decide what&#8217;s possible for you. But they can stay curious alongside you and help you ask different questions.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Rather than writing a movement off completely, maybe it&#8217;s worth asking:</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>Have I explored this movement with genuine curiosity?</li>

<li>Is it just a movement my body doesn’t love (which is totally fair!)</li>

<li>Do I understand the technique behind this skill?</li>

<li>Have I sought out expert coaching to analyze this?</li>
</ul>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Maybe the next questions become:</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>What exactly is making this difficult?</li>

<li>Within my unique scenario, how could I adjust my approach to adapt the skill rather than avoid it?</li>

<li>Can I work on the technique or strength that underpins this skill in a different way, so that I don&#8217;t have a gap in my understanding?</li>
</ul>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Sometimes the alternative really is the right choice. But every now and then, it might be worth circling back to a movement you&#8217;ve already decided isn&#8217;t for you, not because you expect to conquer it, but simply to see what it has to teach you.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Let&#8217;s be clear. I&#8217;m not saying you&#8217;ll eventually be able to do <em>the thing </em>if you lean into it more.<em></em></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">That isn&#8217;t the point.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Curiosity isn&#8217;t always about getting past a limitation. Sometimes it&#8217;s about learning exactly where it begins, where it ends, and what it has to teach you.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">And that’s enough.</p>
