As an instructor, it's a good practice to phrase things in the positive. Cues like "engage your core - straighten your legs - send energy out the toes" etc... Basically, try to tell your students what you WANT them to do, more than you're telling them what NOT to do.

That being said.... there are times when it can be super effective to demonstrate what not to do, or as we like to call it a "common error."
*

For your viewing pleasure, (and hopefully educational too) here's a smattering of common errors for a straddle invert on silks. Any of these look familiar for yourself or your students?

We have an EXTENSIVE invert section in our Level 1 Silks Teacher Training and we reference this video at the very end of the section. After we've looked at ALL the progressions / drills / and instruction on how to do a clean and strong invert. (Ps. our next Level 1 training is this November!! Join us!)

Disclaimers:
1) When demonstrating common errors in a class setting, we suggest only highlighting ONE error at a time, to really focus on a technique point you are trying to address
2) Always follow up by demonstrating the CORRECT way, so that your student's aren't left with what NOT to do as the last thing they saw.

This floorial choreography dates back to circa 2010 when I first started looking into jump throughs on rope. As I was playing I thought back to this time in my life and suddenly had the thought that I knew more back then. Do you ever get that feeling? Sometimes I read back journal entries to myself from years ago and realize the lesson I JUST learned I actually learned a decade ago, I just forgot. Time is confusing. Our minds do not keep all our lessons in them, we have to keep relearning. Why? To keep us from being bored?

As I watched this video back I played it in reverse and it somehow made more sense to me that way. Jumping through the loops again, backwards and none the wiser

Rope “Fast Track” is for people who have completed a Level 1 Silks Teacher Training with Paper Doll Militia or another approved provider. This one day course piggybacks on the foundations and themes covered in our silks training and covers rope specific material in a condensed course such as grip work, toe climbing, other additional wraps and skills, and an intro to working with momentum.

This choreography came out of explorations with wrapping and unwrapping footlocks, working with contrasting musicality, and a lot of fabric theory. I'm excited to keep developing it.
