As we accelerate towards opening night, I continue to struggle to show the nuance of the troubled male character. In 75 minutes can we get across the complexity of him? He needs to cross the line, but not too much . . . because on some level he needs to remain forgivable. If we he were unforgivable then that obvious statement "why does she stay" just gains traction.

At the same time, minimizing his actions to make him forgivable lessens the intensity of the message of the show, and how much we withstand from the stance of love. They say that art mirrors life. It’s ironic that as a director of this piece I am grappling with the same question that this show is shining a light onto. Where is the line? How far is too far?

Sarah writes, performs, choreographs and directs circus theatre as well as teaches masterclasses, retreats & Teacher Trainings. She has worked extensively internally in and around the US, UK, Mexico, India, Lebanon, Egypt, Austria, Germany, Croatia, Netherlands, Spain, Italy and Greece.
*
*
Creatively, Sarah has been been inspired most recently to create narratively driven, issue-based circus theatre. She was selected by the List as one of Scotland’s most Influential and Creative women of 2018 for her production of Egg. Egg is an aerial theatre production on aerial plastic looking at our modern approach to fertility. Sarah is now directing a new piece, Arthropoda, featuring aerial net and Cyr wheel which delves into the traps we unknowingly create ourselves in our relationships. Arthropoda will debut at Manipulate Visual Theatre Festival the 3rd of February, 2023.

With her 3 decades of experience on stage in theatre, dance, music, and circus, Rain’s life’s work is in the integration of circus arts with other artistic disciplines. She has been creating, performing, and coaching with Paper Doll Militia since its inception in 2006.
*
Rain’s devised work often sprouts from the seed of a strong scenographic vision. She brings that vision to life through the integration of movement and circus arts. Rain continues to push the boundaries of aerial arts through her work with invented apparatus and innovative design.

*
Rain’s passion for aerial coaching brings her all over the world teaching specialty workshops, teacher trainings, and retreats (Greece, Mexico & Panama). When she’s not on the road, Rain offers private lessons out of her home studio East Los Angeles. She lives there with her husband Paul and two Greek kitties, Tickle and Homer.

Samantha is a collaborative, multifaceted aerialist who excels in taking big ideas off the paper and bringing them to life. With a unique background spanning across the dance, acro, and aerial realms, Samantha has spent a decade diving deep into the art of teaching to create environments that are safe, supportive, and inspiring for both students and teachers.
*
Samantha is based out of Elevated Aerials in Cincinnati, OH. She specializes in lyra, sling, lollipop, pole, and one of a kind aerial creations, with dance experience in modern, contemporary, ballroom, and contact improv.
*
She has developed aerial programs, mentorship programs, and communities that focus on inclusiveness and accessibility, while continuously living the life of a student to grow her own movement and teaching practices. Samantha is driven to help students find their own individual, creative style.

Niff (she/her) is an innovative aerialist in Philly, & Founder of Secret Circus. Niff has been coaching aerial for almost two decades. She specializes in anatomy, technique, and innovative aerial choreography and pathways. Niff is known for her “aerial brain” in creating and envisioning unique aerial sequences on many aerial apparatuses.

Niff has a keen eye for what students need to develop to meet their goals with a vast knowledge from years of study and practice. Niff has a teaching degree from Ecole National de Cirque in Montreal and is a sought-after coach and choreographer.

Jessica has been an instructor on the Paper Doll Militia teaching team since 2017. She specializes in leading our in-person trainings, traveling to studios all over the world in addition to hosting annual trainings at her studio, Sora Aerial Arts. Jessica is the founder and owner of Sora Aerial Arts in Lexington, KY as well as the artistic director of Sora Contemporary Circus. Aside from running her businesses, Jessica is also a choreographer, an award-winning aerial artist, and produces original aerial theatre productions for both her students and her professional company.

Jessica holds a Bachelor’s in Special Education: Learning and Behavior Disorders and taught in the public school system for 3 years before pursuing aerial arts as a full time career. Jessica is inspired by expressive art, energized by the process of creation, and is driven by the creativity and enthusiasm of her students.
