This Twisted Tale 2011 * * We are going to post a This Twisted Tale
2011
*
*
We are going to post a series of snippets from our old show from 10 years ago. Wow. 10 years ago!
*
*
The show itself was about a friendship between a little girl and the devil. We portrayed the devil as a catalyst for change rather than an evil-doer. We wanted to emphasize that dark experiences or hard times are not necessary negative, rather they should be seen simply as change or an invitation towards a shift. Sometimes the world will fall apart and we need to figure out how it fits together again. Sometimes we ourselves need to destroy in order to rebuild.
*
*
"Lift the rock
Shake the ground
Effect your world
Smash it up and in so doing make anew."
*
*
From our very first show we worked with integration of light and moving image to create scenic environments. For this production, we were able to afford a projector for this piece, whereas our first show Rara Avis (2006) we used an old fashioned overhead projector and use textiles such as lace, and leaves and twigs to create a visual landscape for one of the scenes.
*
*
We will post some more of this old footage. Watch this space.

We cannot be in the theatre together. And there are live artists everywhere making the transition from stage to screen. Adapting and learning along the way. We are working with @Rarebirdmedia for adapting our production to film. And by this we didn't want to merely capture the stage show, but we wanted to use filmic methods to do what is not possible on stage. The medium of film allows for composition techniques which guide the eye to see the narrative because of frame and camera pathway.

About Us:⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ It's been a w About Us:⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
It's been a while since we've done an "About Us" post. Hi everyone! Rain and Sarah here...Co-Artistic Directors and Co-founders of Paper Doll Militia. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
*⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
*⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The first question people ask is usually about our name. Back in 2006 our first show was inspired by Tim Burton's book "The Melancholy Death of Oyster Boy" (Swipe left) which has a vintage and hand-drawn aesthetic. Our roots are extremely DIY and homegrown, so the idea of little cut outs of Paper Dolls was the right image. There were four of us at the time, so we wanted our name to include something like "ensemble" or "collective" but had more of hard edge to it to it. The Paper Doll Militia was born! Over the years folks have had lots of different interpretations of the name, and formed their own vision of what it means to them, which is exactly what we aspire to do with our art. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
*⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
"Paper Doll Militia’s oxymoronic name perfectly describes the paradox of control and abandon that their performances embody"- Irene Brown⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
*⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
*⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
We've been going strong for 15 years, now based on two continents, and our company as morphed and developed into many different visions. Over the years, two subsets of the company have emerged. 1) The creation and production side of the company (Original Aerial Theatre Productions) & 2) The instructional side (Specialty Workshops, Teacher Trainings & Retreats) ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
*⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
*⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
These two components influence one another in many ways, constantly. However, one of our company goals is to complete our Vertical Theatre Method Book and E-courses which joins these two sides perfectly...VTM is an instructional resource of our company's method for creating theatrical aerial work. (coming soon-ish)⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Trying out my new @ripple_yogawear jumpsuit with a Trying out my new @ripple_yogawear jumpsuit with a fun rope sequence, an oldie but a goodie ❤️.

I put together this sequence many moons ago when I gave myself the puzzle of wrapping for a drop (back salto) and trying to find something that’s not a drop from the starting wrap. I’ve found so many fun sequences working with this prompt.
*
*
My favorite part of this sequence is combining the rope flick with a straddle switch to create a dynamic transition.
