What qualities make a great aerial teacher? * * We What qualities make a great aerial teacher?
*
*
We're constantly reflecting on greater aerial community and how we can invest in it. While there's a plethora of important qualities that make an amazing instructor, we've identified an essential value that we think creates a huge impact on the students...
*
*
Great Aerial Instructors have GRIT
*
*
• You stick in there with your students, encouraging every step of the way
• You don't shy away from difficult scenarios
• You have a growth mindset which allows you to help your students see their challenges as stepping stones to success, rather than roadblocks to failure
*
*
We're proud to showcase our amazing graduates who all have GRIT and have demonstrated their dedication to this unique and wonderful field.
*
Thank you for being amazing!

Oh man, the tail of the silk is tangled again! * Oh man, the tail of the silk is tangled again!
*
*
Ever had this happen and it really screw up your choreography? Maybe it twisted so much you couldn’t split the silks at the top to come through them. Or it’s twisted below you and pulls in a way that throws off your choreography?
*
*
Well this happened to us in Unhinged. The silks got fully twisted and for the next moment we needed them open. We played with ways of untwisting it and found this moment. So the challenge, ending up becoming a unique moment that we both loved.
*
*
Have there been times where you embraced rather than rejected something and you were pleasantly surprised?

Is it just me or is hip stability one of the most Is it just me or is hip stability one of the most overlooked movement mechanics for aerialists?
*
*
The focus of of an aerialist’s attention usually goes to either 1) shoulder stability or 2) Hip mobility. (Gotta get them splits for claps, right?)
*
*
But the positions we constantly ask our bodies to perform require a TREMENDOUS amount of hip stability. An aerialist’s movement vocabulary can include drops onto single thighs or ankles, and we’re continually pushing our hips to their end range.
*
*
Need some hip stability inspiration? I started incorporating this simple balance-based exercise into my warm-ups lately and I am loving it.
*
*
🦵🏻 Stand on one leg on a firm yoga block
⭕️ Circle the hips 5x in each direction
📏 Bring your leg away from your midline and lean the torso in the opposite direction
🏅 Extra challenge: bring the arms overhead
*
*
Of course, do both sides!
*
*
Give it a try and let me know how it feels in your body 👯‍♂️

🧐Whats the difference between sequencing and ch 🧐Whats the difference between sequencing and choreography?
*
💃🏻I’ve been pondering this lately, and for me, I think of sequencing as creating a string of tricks, where as choreography includes specified moments of extraneous movement, tempo changes, shape exploration, etc…Choreography is what happens when we go beyond the “trick” Or sometimes even get rid of it completely.
*
🧱Of course, there’s nothing wrong with sequencing tricks, that’s the building blocks of of an aerialist’s movement vocabulary.
*
🌀But when it comes to choreography, it’s really easy to fall into the trap of choreographing through stringing together tricks and then calling it a day…
*
*
🙆🏼‍♀️Instead, try to think about sequencing MOVEMENTS instead of tricks. Start with a single position and explore where that wants to lead you. What are all the choreographic possibilities? It might take you down an entirely different road than expected
*
🤩I had a lot of fun developing this choreography. I wanted to start by releasing a tangle. Then I got inspired by all the choreographic possibilities of tying, releasing, and retying a footlock. Then i added the layer of playing with dynamic tempo changes. Its amazing how much there is to work with when you take away the focus on the tricks.
*
❓Do you have a choreographic approach that informs your process? Or if you’re new to choreographing, are you inspired by a particular genre, artist, or concept? Share your approach and inspirations in the comments 👇🏻

Entering onto the stage is a golden opportunity fo Entering onto the stage is a golden opportunity for theatricality.
*
*
How many times have you started an aerial piece standing next to your apparatus? Or how about the classic “walk up to the apparatus like this is the first time you’re seeing it” 😜
*
*
🙋🏼‍♀️Don’t worry, you’re not alone! It’s easy to fall into the default mode of standard entrances and exits.
*
*
Next time, can you ask yourself, is there another entrance possibility that will provide some theatrical context for the act? How can the entrance give the audience some insight into the character’s journey?
*
*
Some of our favorite creative prompts for discovering new ways to enter the stage:
*
*
✨A suprising character reveal (example in this video clip!)
✨ Make an extreme tempo choice (very fast or very slow)
✨ Enter with a clear emotional motivation
✨Utalize a prop
✨Using spoken text
✨Enter with sound effect
✨ Make eye contact with the audience
✨Enter facing away from the audience
*
*
There are SO many ways to spice up your stage entrance, what are some of your favorite examples from your own performances, or others that you’ve seen! Let us know in the comments 👇🏻
