Rara Avis

Wise Fool Studios, Santa Fe, New Mexico
www.WiseFoolNM.org

Paper Doll Militia’s first full-length aerial theatre production is a fantastical performance about love, death, the darkness of the human soul and the light that can be found through community and play. Rara Avis, the rare bird, tells the story of four social misfits suffering from their tragic flaws in their desire to connect. With astounding acrobatic feats and awe-inspiring aerial dance, the darkness of the plot comes off with a touch of comedy, heightened with the hilarity of physical theater and charming narrative rhymes. Live music and shadow puppetry lace Rara Avis with something reminiscent of a children’s story or a dream. Come play with us in our human dream of dreams.

The Sacred and The Profane Festival

Portland, Maine
Paper Doll Militia was invited to present a performance installation for The Sacred and The Profane Festival in 2007 and 2008. In collaboration with the Saw Orchestra, the PDM has created two site-specific performance pieces for the festival.

About The Sacred and The Profane Festival:
True to its name, this event is both mischievous and enlightening as some of Portland’s most innovative artists exhibit their work in the powerfully somber halls of The Battery Steele. The S&P features site-specific installations by visual artists and performances by dancers, singers, and musicians. Liberated from the rituals of traditional exhibition spaces, artworks are presented anonymously and artists often collaborate to make unconventional pieces that directly respond to the tone and architecture of the bunker. The Sacred and Profane has become one of the most eagerly anticipated events of the year and after ten years continues to remain fresh and exciting, boldly advancing the edge of contemporary art in Maine.

Sand By the Ton

Paper Doll Militia performed a site specific piece with Epiphany, a 30 ft. metal sculpture originally part of the Crude Awakening instillation at Burning Man in 2007. This astounding goddess woman is kneeling with hands out stretched and chains for hair. We started the piece on top of Epiphany’s thighs, and slowly made our way to the dangling aerial chain that hung in front of her. We performed 3 times throughout the evening, across from the suspended steam boat in the V.I.P section of this massive event. The party was epic, with tons of imported sand, swimming pools, a carnival midway, live bands, art instillations, and electronic music rooms, and something like 10,000 people, we were thrilled to be a part of this amazing event thrown by Big Art Studios.

Rain Anya returned to the place that started it all- Santa Fe, New Mexico. Where the Paper Doll Militia began as a little seedling, Rain appropriately came to play a dandelion seed dancing in the wind in the 2011 Circus Luminous. This delightful circus production happens every year on Thanksgiving weekend, and has become a holiday staple for the Santa Fe locals for the past 9 years. Selling out EVERY show this year, Luminous was a smashing success, a collaboration between the downtown historic Lensic Theatre and Wise Fool New Mexico. Rain Anya (Co-Artistic Director of The Paper Doll Militia) and Amy Christian (Artistic Director of Wise Fool, NM) created a side by side aerial silk act entitled “Seeds to Silk.” The two fabric performers intertwined their skills into one captivating performance, weaving elements of floor movement, silhouette, stillness, stunning solo sequences and dynamic synchronized choreography.
